Getting started

How to add an address to Padlok?

Start by tapping the + button on the main screen. You can then either look up an address in the search field, or select an address from one of your contacts.

Why does my address have no code associated?

Padlok takes data privacy very seriously. For that reason, it only knows about the codes you provide. It’ll never use a shared database, nor feed an external database with your codes. Your data is yours, and stays yours.

My addresses don’t show up on my other device, what can I do?

Padlok syncs through iCloud, so start by making sure both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account, and that iCloud is enabled for Padlok in the system settings. Syncing then happens in the background: it needs an internet connection, and it may be delayed while low power mode is enabled. If a lot of information changed at once, Padlok will tell you that synchronization will resume later; in that case, leave the application open for a while. If your addresses are still missing after that, please get in touch, I’ll be happy to help.

Notifications

How to enable notifications?

After you’ve added your first address, enable the switch labeled “Show info when I’m near”. When applicable, you must allow the application to locate you, and to send you notifications.

When are notifications triggered?

Notifications are triggered when the application considers itself close enough to the address. To improve accuracy, make sure to set the location permission to “Always”.

I was not notified when I expected I would, what happened?

Notifications rely on iOS geofencing, which wakes the application when you enter a pre-defined area around the address. Padlok does not know where you are at every moment, it is only woken up by the system. Sometimes, the system won’t wake Padlok: because the location accuracy is not good enough, because low power mode is enabled, or even because background refresh is disabled. Make sure that no warning message is shown below the notification switch. If there is one, notifications might not work properly.

Sharing

Can I share some address information with someone who does not have Padlok installed?

Sure! Sharing using a link works for anyone with an internet connection and an up-to-date browser. On iOS, an App Clip will open a native experience and suggest installing the application so they can make the shared code their own.

A code has changed, can I update the link I’ve already shared?

Of course! The application will offer to do it for you. You’ll have two choices: update the link, making the new codes available without changing its address, or recreate it, so that the old link becomes unavailable. The second option is better if you don’t want everyone who already has the link to access the updated information.

Do the links I share expire?

Yes. A share link stays available for 45 days, then it is automatically deleted from my servers. Anyone opening it afterwards will simply be told that the information is no longer available, and you are free to share a new link whenever you need to.

Can I delete a link I’ve already shared?

Of course, and at any time. Open the address, and use the red delete button right below the share button. The link becomes unusable straight away, for everyone you sent it to.

What is the QR code, and does it work offline?

The QR code is another way to hand over a share link: instead of sending it, you show it, and the other person scans it from Padlok. Since it carries the very same link, it does not work offline: both devices need an internet connection, one to generate the link, the other to open it.

Can I have several links for the same address?

Not yet. For now, each address has a single active link: sharing it again hands out the same link, and recreating it replaces the previous one. This is on my list for a future update.

Privacy

What data is collected by Padlok?

Padlok does not gather any personal data, any address or any address info. The only data Padlok collects is anonymized technical data, used for purchase management and statistics, or for analytics and performance monitoring to improve the application quality and stability.

Where is my data stored and is it accessible by others?

Your application data is stored on device, and in iCloud if enabled on device. Only your devices connected to the same iCloud account can access this data. Nobody else.

How is the data I share with a link stored?

Not in an exploitable way. When you generate a share link, your data is encrypted on your device, and then sent to my servers in France. The encryption key is in the URL. Without the URL, there is no way to actually access the data. I cannot access your data, and neither can anyone else. When opening the link, either the application or the website will decrypt the data sent by my server on your device. Therefore, this is an end-to-end encryption mechanism.

Can I lock Padlok with Face ID?

Yes, with Premium. Open the about screen, and enable “Biometry lock” in the Settings section. Padlok will then ask for Face ID, Touch ID or Optic ID, depending on your device, before revealing your addresses and codes.

Premium

What happens after my subscription ends?

After your subscription ends, you will lose the premium features that come with it. If you have more than three addresses created, you will only be able to consult the three closest ones, so you won’t lose any data. And you’ll be free to delete any addresses you want.

Can I upgrade to lifetime premium before my subscription ends?

Yes, you can! First you’ll need to cancel your subscription renewal, then an “Upgrade to lifetime” button will be available in the about screen, at a lower price.

I bought Padlok, how do I get it back on a new device?

Your purchase is tied to your Apple Account, not to a device. Sign in with the same Apple Account you used to buy Padlok, open the about screen, and tap “Restore previous purchases”. Your Premium advantages will come back right away, and you will not be charged again.
